This Week at the Movies, Part 2 (Oct. 11-13, 2013)

Because of embargoes (those happy little restrictions on when critics can post reviews, good or bad), a lot of our critics aren’t able to share links with you until release day. Here are some last-minute reviews for this weekend’s upcoming films. We’ve kept in all the reviews posted yesterday as well so you can have more help in deciding what to see (if you haven’t already).

Our critics have been hard at work reviewing the latest films. Here is a look at what’s coming out this weekend (in select cities, check your local listings) and what else may be in theaters right now.

Opening: October 11-13, 2013

Le Week-End

Ross Miller @ Thoughts On Film

  • Excerpt: This insightful comedy drama is at its strongest when it focuses solely on the main duo and thankfully Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan’s brilliant performances are there to carry the film squarely on their shoulders and, most importantly, make you believe in their well-worn love-hate relationship. In that respect the film succeeds at what it sets out to do.

Darren Mooney @ the m0vie blog

  • Excerpt: An axe to grind.

Cold War

The Immigrant

Tony Dayoub @ Cinema Viewfinder

  • Excerpt: On its face, THE IMMIGRANT appears to be Gray’s most blatant quote of THE GODFATHER (PART II, specifically) yet. But it’s how Gray subverts our expectations connected to that film that ultimately marks THE IMMIGRANT as his strongest film yet.

Only Lovers Left Alive

[New Today] Tony Dayoub @ Cinema Viewfinder

  • Excerpt: …as much as it is an immortal romance, ONLY LOVERS is also Jarmusch’s elegiac ode to humanity and it’s resilience.

Papusza

Marilyn Ferdinand @ Ferdy on Films

  • Excerpt: Papusza was born in 1908 and died in 1987, thus making her a witness to both world wars, the occupation of Poland by the Soviets, and the forced settlement of the nomadic Romy in permanent homes. That she learned to read and write is remarkable in itself. That her poetry found a wide audience and acclaim in Poland and other countries is a near miracle. Yet, the hardships she suffered as a Romy woman dogged her to the end of her life.

Sign Painters

Andrew Wyatt @ Look/Listen (St. Louis Magazine)

  • Excerpt: Directors Levine and Macon keep the film lively and engaging by focusing on colorful anecdotes and painters’ common passion for their art form.

Story of My Death

Michael Pattison @ Grolsch Film Works

Watermark

Pat Mullen @ Cinemablographer

  • Excerpt: Does for water what Gravity does for air.
