This Week at the Movies, Part 2 (Jul. 27-29, 2012)

Because of embargoes (those happy little restrictions on when critics can post reviews, good or bad), a lot of our critics aren’t able to share links with you until release day. Here are some last-minute reviews for this weekend’s upcoming films. We’ve kept in all the reviews posted yesterday as well so you can have more help in deciding what to see (if you haven’t already).

Our critics have been hard at work reviewing the latest films. Here is a look at what’s coming out this weekend (in select cities, check your local listings) and what else may be in theaters right now.

Opening: July 27, 2012

Nuit #1

Joshua Brunsting @ The CriterionCast

  • Excerpt: Emond’s film is a beautiful and romantic look at the state of modern romance and just how disenchanted this generation has become by everything, including their respective relationships with one another. As icy cold as a winter’s snow, color this film as just the type of grade-A counterprogramming that the film doctors have ordered this summer season.

The Runway

Ron Wilkinson @ Monstersandcritics.com

  • Excerpt: Inspired by a true story, this Disneyish sally to the crash site that spawned a miracle lacks the muscle of reality.

2011 Films

A Dangerous Method

Margaret

Luke Bonanno @ DVDizzy.com

  • Excerpt: Margaret’s lengthy shelving is quite evident, beginning with the fact that it stars Anna Paquin, who just turned 30, as a believable high school student. Also dating the film is talk of the September 11th terrorist attacks as still fresh wounds and debate over the United States’ presence in Afghanistan.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Jerry Roberts @ Armchair Cinema

  • Excerpt: A boring first hour gives way to a surprisingly good finale.
