The Bride!
Jerry Roberts @ armchaircinema.com
- Excerpt: The movie is sometimes brilliant and more-often-than-not frustrating. It has structural problems. Some developments don’t make sense, and the back half is a massive tone shift from the opening – it peters out when it should be going off the rails. But, you know, I’d rather see a movie with some spunk, a work of bold originality, one that swings for the fences than another pre-fab formula picture trading on a familiar brand name.
EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert
Jerry Roberts @ armchaircinema.com
- Excerpt: The restoration of his concert footage is astonishing, giving us to sense of being there, the sound is crisp, the picture is crystal clear and the experience is quite astonishing. We get to see Elvis at the moment when most figure that he sold out, that his career was over. Not a bit true. He was at the top of his form, glitter and all.
Scream 7
Jerry Roberts @ armchaircinema.com
- Excerpt: This was my third Scream movie, and it didn’t make me want to do a marathon of this series. My takeaway is this: If the point is to create characters that know they’re in a horror movie, then I feel free to invoke my understanding that if I’m not all that impressed by the source materials, why go after the sequels? If I didn’t like Scream, why go forward in the series?

First They Came for My College
Christopher Reed @ Hammer to Nail
- Excerpt: First they came for the college. Tomorrow they’ll come for you.
Grind
Christopher Reed @ Hammer to Nail
- Excerpt: A well-constructed anthology film that ably mixes horror and comedy, “Grind”—from the directing trio of Brea Grant, Ed Dougherty, and Chelsea Stardust—is also a sharp critique of late-stage capitalism and the Amazonian/Starbucksian/Etceterian behemoths at its center.
SXSW Review: “Basic”
Christopher Reed @ Film Festival Today
- Excerpt: Fast-paced and peppy, Basic has excellent technical elements to support the sharp and witty script, the icing on the cake of the terrific performances. Everyone needs friends, and I think I now want these folks as mine.
SXSW Review: “DreamQuil”
Christopher Reed @ Film Festival Today
- Excerpt: After a while, we’re never sure what is real and what isn’t, and while it can be fun to play that guessing game, such riddles only work when the final reveal lands with impact. Here it’s just a muddle.
SXSW Review: “Love Language”
Christopher Reed @ Film Festival Today
- Excerpt: Beyond the sad reality that, in our present, most folks with writer’s block desperate for vows would probably turn to AI, the real hole at the center of “Love Language” is that the ending simply doesn’t work.
SXSW Review: “The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist”
Christopher Reed @ Film Festival Today
- Excerpt: I may be the furthest thing from an “apocaloptimist,” but I appreciate Roher and Tyrell’s efforts.
Ugly Cry
Christopher Reed @ Hammer to Nail
- Excerpt: Ultimately, it’s a very ambitious work, succeeding on most levels and presaging an impressive career behind the camera for Robinson.
