Pre-2020 Film Reviews
Anastasia
Rick Aragon @ Rick’s Texan Reviews
- Excerpt: Remembered more as the “comeback” film for Ingrid Bergman (and her subsequent Best Actress Oscar for the film), Anastasia is entertaining and efficient even if a bit stage bound.
Arsenic and Old Lace
Joker
Karl Marx City
Marilyn Ferdinand @ Alliance of Women Film Journalists
- Excerpt: As citizens in several parts of the world (among them, Italy, Sweden, and the United States) toy with the idea of authoritarianism as a way to bring order and stability to the frequent messiness of democracy, it’s instructive to take stock of what an authoritarian regime actually looks like in practice. In my estimation, viewing the 2016 documentary Karl Marx City is a good place to start.
Lonelyhearts
- Excerpt: I know nothing of the Broadway adaptation, but I do know West’s novel, which is a marvel of scathing prose expressing a blackly comic view of humanity. None of West’s mastery is present in this film, which turns the material into a sentimental, toothless, and oddly optimistic film worth seeing only for its actors and cinematography.
Shaun the Sheep Movie
- Excerpt: Who knew a movie without words would be such an enjoyable watch? Shaun the Sheep Movie is a fun story and the reason we need more stop-motion animated films.
A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon
- Excerpt: A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon is a decent follow-up to the first film. The characters are filled with personality and the story is enjoyable.
