2013 Films Not Yet In Theaters
Blood Brother
Kenji Fujishima @ Slant Magazine
Camille Rewinds
Paulo Peralta @ CinEuphoria [Portuguese]
Enzo Avitabile Music Life
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat @ SpiritualityandPractice.com
- Excerpt: A compelling documentary by Jonathan Demme that makes an altar out of our ears.
Enzo Avitabile Music Life
Cole Smithey @ ColeSmithey.com
- Excerpt: “Enzo Avitabile, Music Life” is a music lover’s dream.
The Exhibition
Marilyn Ferdinand @ Ferdy on Films
- Excerpt: Exhibition is a 360-degree look at the broad range of issues surrounding a Vancouver-area farmer who admitted to killing 49 women, the vast majority of them First Nation prostitutes, during the 1990s and 2000s, and a successful artist named Pamela Masik who undertook a project to paint huge portraits of all of the victims in what she calls “The Forgotten” series. For me, The Exhibition offers another exposition of an issue I find an eternally fascinating conundrum: the line between expression and exploitation.
The Fear (La Por)
MaryAnn Johanson @ FlickFilosopher.com
- Excerpt: Brutally blunt in its depiction of domestic violence. I almost wish I hadn’t seen this film, it’s that almost completely unbearable…
Ghostlight
- Excerpt: Though the scares don’t always land, writer/director Jeff Ferrell relies on solid, old-fashioned storytelling, making for a thoroughly watchable ghost story.
H4
Marilyn Ferdinand @ Ferdy on Films
- Excerpt: A modern version of Shakespeare’s Henry IV pts. 1 and 2 is told from an African-American point of view. The rousing, beautifully performed film is led by Harry Lennix, whose successful appeal to Kickstarter donors made the film possible.
Horror Stories
Peter Nellhaus @ Coffee Coffee and more Coffee
The Immigrant
Donald Levit @ ReelTalk Movie Reviews
Mars Project
- Excerpt: “Mars Project” raises interesting questions about how we define and treat mental illness, and how those definitions impact not just the afflicted, but their families.
Melaza
Marilyn Ferdinand @ Ferdy on Films
- Excerpt: Economic privation is on the minds of people throughout the world, and filmmakers are reflecting their times. What makes Melaza so vital is not the seriousness and timeliness of its subject, but rather its extraordinary and absurd look at how a particular set of people react to the ruin of their way of life.
Mister John
- Excerpt: Mister John gestures at ideas without addressing any of them, making points only by vague suggestion and, ultimately, not really sure what its conclusions are. The film, hence, has more to do with political speeches than with art – it talks but it doesn’t say anything.
Mystery Road
Simon Miraudo @ Quickflix
Only Lovers Left Alive
- Excerpt: Somewhere around the lovely scene of Tilda Swinton dancing, freely and wholeheartedly, to the old soul record, Jarmusch’s M.O. becomes clear: Only Lovers Left Alive is a hanging-out move, just with vampires.
The Painting
Gregory J. Smalley @ 366 Weird Movies
- Excerpt: If the story had been sketched out with as much loving detail as the beautiful Impressionist-styled artwork, this might have been a masterpiece, rather than something that’s just nice to look at.
The Right Kind of Wrong
- Excerpt: Would be a sweet rom-com if not for the anti-blogger venom.
Sandcastle
Kathy Gibson @ Access Bollywood
See You Tomorrow, Everyone
Side by Side
MaryAnn Johanson @ FlickFilosopher.com
- Excerpt: Misses more marks than it attempts to hit, but there’s a refreshing sweetness to this child’s-eye view of grief and tragedy.
