Because of embargoes (those happy little restrictions on when critics can post reviews, good or bad), a lot of our critics aren’t able to share links with you until release day. Here are some last-minute reviews for this weekend’s upcoming films. We’ve kept in all the reviews posted yesterday as well so you can have more help in deciding what to see (if you haven’t already).
Our critics have been hard at work reviewing the latest films. Here is a look at what’s coming out this weekend (in select cities, check your local listings) and what else may be in theaters right now.
Opening: October 24-26, 2013

2013 Films Not Yet In Theaters
Child of God
The Congress
MaryAnn Johanson @ FlickFilosopher.com
- Excerpt: A hugely ambitious film reminiscent of The Matrix and the works of Terry Gilliam while also carving out its own apocalyptic sci-fi space.
Eastern Boys
Michael Pattison @ Front Row Reviews
Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me
Marilyn Ferdinand @ Ferdy on Films
- Excerpt: Whether or not she intended to, Chiemi Karasawa filmed a much different, much more valuable film than the one I thought I was going to see, one in which we are brought uncomfortably close to the tail end of a life, one now filled with infirmity.
Eliza Lynch Queen of Paraguay
Michael Pattison @ Front Row Reviews
Gerontophilia
Marco Albanese @ Stanze di Cinema [Italian]
- Excerpt: Da dimenticare…
Ghost Burger
- Excerpt: It’s a cute premise that could easily result in a one joke movie but Ghost Burger defies expectations by delivering a continually entertaining tale.
Joe
K2: Siren of the Himalayas
Ron Wilkinson @ ItsJustMovies.com
- Excerpt: The latest and greatest in a string series of films about the second highest mountain in the world and the pilgrims who try to climb it.
The Last of the Unjust
Michael Pattison @ Front Row Reviews
Locke
Michael Pattison @ Front Row Reviews
McCanick
Simon Miraudo @ Quickflix
Miss Violence
Mistaken for Strangers
MaryAnn Johanson @ FlickFilosopher.com
- Excerpt: Perhaps the least bullshitting, most unostentatious rock doc ever, often as hilarious as This Is Spinal Tap, though with a different aim in mind in the end…
Night Moves
Michael Pattison @ Front Row Reviews
Only Lovers Left Alive
Michael Pattison @ Front Row Reviews
Palo Alto
Pioneer
Michael Pattison @ Front Row Reviews
A Promise
Leone d’oro a sorpresa
Salvo
Michael Pattison @ Front Row Reviews
Stalingrad
Vadym Grygoriev @ kinoblog.com [Ukrainian]
Still Life
Strange Frame: Love & Sax
Gregory J. Smalley @ 366 Weird Movies
- Excerpt: Imagine dropping a hefty dose of LSD on the set of “Blade Runner,” and you walk through a door and suddenly you’re in the “Star Wars” cantina. Now, imagine that experience animated by the team behind “Fantastic Planet” working under the direction of Ralph Bakshi, take that result and square the weirdness quotient, and you have some inkling of what “Strange Frame”‘s visuals.
Stray Dogs
sxtape
MaryAnn Johanson @ FlickFilosopher.com
- Excerpt: There’s no reason or logic in this found-footage yawner, and nothing rises to the level of even adolescent notions of sexy-scary.
Tall as the Baobab Tree
Bev Questad @ It’s Just Movies
- Excerpt: After a son falls from the village baobab tree and breaks his leg, there is no money for the necessary medical care – unless dad sells a daughter off for marriage.
- Excerpt: Tall as the Baobab Tree considers every point of view in its drama, and avoids being preachy, letting the truth of the scenario speak for itself.
Tom at the Farm
Michael Pattison @ Front Row Reviews
Tracks
Trap Street
MaryAnn Johanson @ FlickFilosopher.com
- Excerpt: It’s never intense enough for the paranoid thriller it wants to be, but it has some chilling things to say about the dangers of the not-quite all-seeing eye of a total-surveillance society.
Under the Skin
Vic+Flo Saw a Bear
Michael Pattison @ Front Row Reviews
Why Don’t You Play in Hell?
The Zero Theorem
