Because of embargoes, a lot of our critics aren’t able to share links with you until release day. Here are some last-minute reviews for this weekend’s upcoming films. We’ve kept in all the reviews posted yesterday as well so you can have more help in deciding what to see (if you haven’t already).
Our critics have been hard at work reviewing the latest films. Here is a look at what’s coming out this weekend (in select cities, check your local listings) and what else may be in theaters right now.

Dirty Grandpa
[New Today] Laura Clifford @ Reeling Reviews
- Excerpt: If the idea of Robert De Niro saying ‘vagina’ a lot or visual gags that portray Efron as a pedophile are your idea of funny, “Dirty Grandpa” will fit the bill.
[New Today] Mark Dujsik @ Mark Reviews Movies
- Excerpt: [De Niro is] invested in this character as much as any actor imaginably could be, and boy, is that fact disheartening.
[New Today] Kristin Dreyer Kramer @ NightsAndWeekends.com
[New Today] Pat Mullen @ Cinemablographer
- Excerpt: Dirty Grandpa parties like it’s 1965. Just go with it.
[New Today] Frank Swietek @ One Guys Opinion
- Excerpt: Every once in awhile a movie comes around that’s so repulsive that you leave it certain that the theatre is in need of fumigation, and get home feeling a desire for a quick shower. ‘Spring Breakers’ was such a monstrosity, and last year ‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2. filled the bill. Such a picture is the abysmal ‘Dirty Grandpa.’
Limited (United States)
Bleak Street
[New Today] Josh Brunsting @ The CriterionCast
Ip Man 3
[New Today] Robert Cashill @ Popdose.com
Kenji Fujishima @ Paste Magazine
Charlie Juhl @ Citizen Charlie
- Excerpt: Ip Man 3 continues the pattern of interrupting what could be thought-provoking marital arts drama with the absurd by casting Mike Tyson as the behind the scenes villain who is even outacted by Ip Man’s wooden kung-fu practice contraption.
Peter Nellhaus @ Coffee, Coffee and more Coffee
- Excerpt: There’s a kind of grace in Yen’s movements that makes me think of Gene Kelly.
Mojave
[New Today] Mark Dujsik @ Mark Reviews Movies
- Excerpt: Mojave is a movie about a screenwriter who comes to realize he has no control, and the movie also serves as an example of what it’s about.
Jared Mobarak @ Jared Mobarak Reviews
- Excerpt: The opening prepares us for an arduous journey of revenge and one-upmanship where two men are fiercely driven to destroy the other rather than survive themselves. Instead it’s a tonally out there character study as divisive as The Counselor and almost as oddly eccentric.

Band of Robbers
- Excerpt: It sounds awful, like yet another delayed-sequel/origin-story/cinematic-universe Product from an art form bent on telling “new” stories based on familiar elements. So maybe it’s due to mere expectation that ‘Band of Robbers’ is so wonderful – sharp, funny, big-hearted, and absolutely true to the spirit of the author in question.

Jeruzalem
[New Today] Jared Mobarak @ The Film Stage
- Excerpt: It’s by no means perfect, but things get tense once the demons rise and the rest simply falls away. The cool creature design and authentic first-person cinematography/lighting later on will have you forgiving any early shortcomings.

No Home Movie
Laura Clifford @ Reeling Reviews
- Excerpt: those willing to submit to the filmmaker’s vision may be surprised that a film consisting of minutes-long takes of barren, arid landscapes, her mother’s Brussels apartment and the occasional conversation can have such a powerful emotional build.
