mississippi_grindHere are review links for this film submitted by our members:

  • Jason Bailey @ Flavorwire
    • Excerpt: For much of its running time, ‘Mississippi Grind’ isn’t even all that interested in how well Gerry does; early on, Curtis tells him, “I don’t care about winning, I just like to play,” and the picture follows much of that lead. Writer/directors Boden and Fleck (‘Half Nelson,’ ‘Sugar’) have always had a knack for inhabiting their locations rather than merely shooting in them, and this is a movie that knows these taverns and tap rooms, these riverboats and pool halls, and is just as interested in hanging out there, reveling in their roll-with-it soundtrack, than in moving the story along in any particular hurry.
  • Nicholas Bell @ Ioncinema
  • Andy Crump @ Movie Mezzanine
    • Excerpt: Pardon the poker idioms, but if [Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck] don’t know when to stay, they at least like to play with their cards close to the vest.
  • Mark Dujsik @ Mark Reviews Movies
    • Excerpt: Boden and Fleck understand that these two characters feed off of each other’s personalities, while fueling the addiction that unifies them.
  • Courtney Howard @ Sassy Mama In LA
    • Excerpt: Though the cards add up to a few shy of 21, GRIND’s throwback vibe and characters make this worth taking a seat at the table.
  • Charlie Juhl @ Citizen Charlie
    • Excerpt: Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds are playing the latter day George Segal and Elliott Gould. Unfortunately, our protagonists this time around are poorly developed and sometimes downright unbelievable, a serious mistake for earnest filmmakers.
  • Kristin Dreyer Kramer @ NightsAndWeekends.com
  • [New – 10/29/15] | Jared Mobarak @ Jared Mobarak Reviews
    • Excerpt: We don’t need flashy sleight-of-hand because that’s not Boden and Fleck’s goal. They’re aiming at the human psyche and our capacity to implode without regard of our own wellbeing.
  • Darren Mooney @ the m0vie blog
    • Excerpt: Keep on grinding…
  • Kristy Puchko @ Spinoff Online, Pajiba
    • Excerpt: Co-writers/co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck lovingly laying out Mississippi Grind with an unhurried hand. The focus here—as Curtis reminds us with crooked smiles and earnest diagloue—is the journey, not the destination.
  • Tom Santilli @ Examiner.com
    • Excerpt: Mississippi Grind, at times, grinds to a halt, or gets side-tracked, but it’s successful as a harrowing look into gambling addiction, the effects and causes and the devastation that is created.
