- Excerpt: People Like Us will make a big impression on some people who don’t see a lot of movies. The more cinematically seasoned are likely to find it a contrived, artificial, and pale imitation of an indie drama.

- Excerpt: Alex Kurtzman, whohas a director has one episode of the J.J. Abrams series “Alias” to his credit before this, has made a reasonably handsome, though visually undistinguished, movie and gotten good performances out of a talented cast. Pine and Banks are two of the best-looking human beings on the planet. They can also act. Kurtzman is certainly not afraid of the squirm factor.
- Cynthia Fuchs @ PopMatters
- Excerpt: The fundamental plotline is the same as for the comic book movies or the Apatow clones: a boy needs to sort out his identity.
- Kimberly Gadette @ doddle
- Excerpt: People, like us? Please? Nah …

- Excerpt: If you’re hankering for some quality mainstream Hollywood feel-good entertainment, and in a way that isn’t either a pejorative or a guilty pleasure, then “People Like Us” is a surprisingly good choice. Sure, this story of long-lost siblings and inherited money has its contrivances and coincidences, but first-time director Alex Kurtzman treats his characters and their lives with respect, looking at some of the tougher emotional choices as troubled, hurting people are put on the path to do the right thing.
