Pre-2023 Film Reviews
Dead Silence (2007)
Sebastian Zavala @ MeGustaElCine.com [Spanish]
- Excerpt: It ends up feeling like a horror experiment that is not lacking in interesting elements (such as stylized and attractive photography by the experienced John R. Leonetti), but that at the end of the day, falls short.
The Great American Pastime (1956)
Rick Aragon @ Rick’s Texan Reviews
- Excerpt: While essentially a B-film, The Great American Pastime has just enough charm to carry it over.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Sebastian Zavala @ MeGustaElCine.com [Spanish]
- Excerpt: As a horror experience centred on the slasher subgenre, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is merely competent. I would recommend it to those new to horror, but those with more experience with the genre will likely find it boring.
My Favorite Year (1982)
Rick Aragon @ Rick’s Texan Reviews
- Excerpt: My Favorite Year is a delightful romp, full of heart and joy but able to move you in its softer moments.
Performance (1970)
Ready or Not (2019)
Sebastian Zavala @ MeGustaElCine.com [Spanish]
- Excerpt: It’s not perfect, and the mix of comedy and suspense probably won’t be for everyone, but for Yours Truly, it ended up being a very fun experience that had me on the edge of my seat most of the time.
Show Boat (1936)
- Excerpt: Whale prepares the viewer for the unreality of what they are about to see with a brilliant opening credits sequence featuring moving cutout figures on a miniature set. He also draws attention to the fact that you are seeing a created object by mixing styles through the film, most notably in some expressionistic moments in the montage accompanying Paul Robeson’s performance of “Ol’ Man River” that are reminiscent of his work in the Universal horror films for which he is most famous.
The Strangers (2008)
Sebastian Zavala @ MeGustaElCine.com [Spanish]
- Excerpt: It’s not perfect, but it still works—still—as a good example of the genre; it’s not hard to see, therefore, why it ended up becoming a franchise that continues to this day.
The Trip to Bountiful (1985)
Rick Aragon @ Rick’s Texan Reviews
- Excerpt: The Trip to Bountiful is both a specific and universal story, with a moving performance from Geraldine Page as a flawed but feisty woman, determined to go back one final time to what was home.
Venus (2006)
Rick Aragon @ Rick’s Texan Review
- Excerpt: Venus is a short, simple story well told, with good performances all around.
