Pre-2020 Film Reviews
Casino Raiders II (1991)
- Excerpt: Truth be told, “Casino Raiders” has not aged particularly well, but is still quite fun to watch, especially due to To’s direction as well as Andrew Lau and Anthony Wong’s presence.
A Dark, Dark Man (2019)
- Excerpt: “A Dark, Dark Man” is an excellent movie, a title that shows the path genre filmmaking should take in order to evolve from its occasional dumbed-down approach, and a testament to Yerzhanov great command of the medium.
Eighth Happiness (1988)
- Excerpt: “Eighth Happiness” has not aged well, and neither the individual scenes nor the narrative as a whole make sense anymore, if they ever did. At the same time, it is always fun to watch the particular actors on screen, with the presence of Chow Yun Fat and Cherie Chung ending up making the movie worthwhile, to a point at least.
Melancholic (2019)
- Excerpt: “Melancholic” is an excellent film that manages to be both exciting and heart-warming, while eloquently presenting a series of very interesting comments through a rather intelligent irony.
Noise (2017)
- Excerpt: “Noise” is a great feature debut for Yusaku Matsumoto, who manages to capture the essence of modern Tokyo through his elaborate narrative, impressive visuals and the performance of his cast.
