Re: a movie reviewer's man cave

Sounds like a nice set-up. I have a similar set-up, unfortunately it's still in my dreams. I'd love to see pictures.

Re: The first time it happened . . .

For me it was "The Graduate" in 1967. It was innovative in its use of sound and it captured the way I felt at that time as a college student, alienated from my parent's generation, searching for a new direction. Oddly enough, I saw "The Graduate" six months after I got out of co...

Yes indeed. Gates of Heaven is a masterpiece.

As was Mr. Death. Here's my review:

Re: Directors whose films you anticipate . . .

I am a fan of Erroll Morris. His films are always so abstract and bizarre that you find yourself drawn into them.

Re: The Worst Films Ever Made . . .

I usually know I'm going to see a bad film and just don't have much choice about it. As an editor, it's my job to catch the films that no-one on my staff is willing to cover. It's one of those problems that people don't consider when they insist this is a dream job. I can understand that, but my pe...

Re: The Worst Films Ever Made . . .

There are probably worse things out there, but I hope I never discover them The problem is that they often fall on you when you least expect them. The worst movies, I find, often happen in the pursuit of something that you hope will be a diamond in the rough. For me, they come in two varieties: One,...

Re: The New Sight & Sound Poll . . .

Vertigo is, to my taste, Hitchcock's best film. It is also the most heartbreaking love story I have ever seen. Think about it: We have a man who is duped into falling passionately and obsessively in love with a woman whom he discovers never existed. The woman hired to play that part falls in love wi...

The New Sight & Sound Poll . . .

I never thought it would happen but the great "Citizen Kane" has been dethroned by Hitchcock's "Vertigo". Normally, I detest movie lists but there are a short few that I take seriously, and the Sight & Sound poll is one of them. The lists of the better film is basically irrel...

The Verdict: The Dark Knight Rises

One of the pleasures of The Dark Knight Rises is the way in which he wraps his story back around, connecting it firmly with the origin story told in Batman Begins and brings the series to a satisfying conclusion. It is a reminder of how few films, even in a series, forget their origins. Second seque...

The Verdict: "The Amazing Spider-man"

This surprised me. I wasn't itching for a reboot of Spider-man but this turned out to be the best movie in the series so far. It is darker, less jokey and has a much better star in the lead.

The Verdict: "Savages"

I'm a fan of Oliver Stone but, for me, this was a well-made film that ultimately didn't add up to much.

The Verdict: "Ice Age - Continental Drift"

Okay, I know this isn't the most cerebral movie in the world, but movies are movies, even the bad ones. This is movie that is best at moments of pure slapstick and deadly dull and boring when it tries to deal with the personal problems of the characters. Really, what do we care about the love affair...

Why do you love the movies?

Last November, I turned 40 years old. I reflected that thirty-five years of those four decades, have been spent going to the movies. I love the movies, they are my passion. Always have been, always will be. I am working toward becoming a film critic. In my lifetime, I think I have seen close to 10,0...

Re: The Worst Films Ever Made . . .

:). Yeah, I suppose there is some consolation in knowing the guy won't be abusing us with his movies again anytime soon. It wasn't so much that he made Freddy Got Fingered that bothered me, I can mentally throw away a bad movie without a second thought. What bothered me was the he INTENTIONALLY set...

I'm on the governing committee. I remember most members by name, though I miss a few on occasion. I was on the GC last year when you were admitted, so I'm more recently familiar with your work.

So I must ask. What have you read, and do you think I'm any good?

The first time it happened . . .

So I have to pose a question that I always pose to fellow cinemaphiles: When did you know? What was the first moment that you realized that the movies were the medium that you felt so passionate about. For me, I've been watching movies my whole life. I started with "The Rescuers" in 1977 (...
