What I want for Christmas
Dear Santa: All I want for Christmas is a pair of Netflix Smart Socks. They can sense when I've fallen asleep. They immediately send a signal to my DVR (I hope) or Netflix feed, pausing the show I'm watching so I don't miss anything. Can't tell you how many times I've slept through parts of TV shows...

Re: a movie reviewer's man cave
I've attached a picture of the screen, some of the speakers and the amp. As you can see, the room is not very wide, so that is about the biggest screen I can squeeze in -- 80-inch (100" or so diagonal) Da-Lite screen (Da-Lite 77324 with High Power finish) I bought on Ebay for about $60, which i...

Re: a movie reviewer's man cave
I'll get some pictures of it to you early next year when I'm done with all the screeners and awards-related movies. One thing that is nice about the Sony Blu-ray player is that it can also stream online movies, baseball games, etc. directly from my home internet wi-fi. I can also download movies off...

Re: Fox Goes Digital: NO MORE DVD and Blu-ray Screeners UNLE
I don't favor a boycott, but I am perfectly willing to put Fox at the bottom of my list for movies I will have time to see before the end of the year. Part of the problem with a boycott is that we'd be fighting a technological change by clinging to the past. It also makes it look like we care more a...

Gamergate and the criticism of critics
Even though I am not a gamer, I read with interest an Op-Ed piece in today's NY Times about ugly developments in the video game field, particularly in the area of game criticism and the rough way that game fans have threatened and otherwise gone after game critics. The article, "Can Video Games...

a movie reviewer's man cave
I've recently upgraded my home video viewing facilities to include 3D movies. For those of you interested in the technical aspects of home theater, here is a brief description of my home theater, which I started building about 10 years ago, on a modest budget. I am, after all, a senior citizen livin...

Re: The first time it happened . . .
For me it was "The Graduate" in 1967.
It was innovative in its use of sound and it captured the way I felt at that time as a college student, alienated from my parent's generation, searching for a new direction.

Re: The Verdict: "Savages"
Most of Stone's films don't add up to much, but this one was a lot more fun than most of them. I liked the way it played around with my expectations and the way it played around with the ending, too.
It was not serious at all, and I like that.
