  1. Dear Mr. Abrams,

We hope this message finds you doing well. We are two seventh graders, Nandini Jhaveri and Tarani Kalagara and we both attend Kenyon Woods Middle School in South Elgin, Illinois. We are doing a Genius Hour argumentative project for our Language Arts class which allows us to research a topic of our choice and express our viewpoint on that topic. We have chosen film critics/cinema and we are arguing whether film critics are still relevant or not. We decided to consult an expert for the topic and we think you would be a great person to help us with our questions considering you are a film critic and have had experience working in this field. It would be a great help if you could take some time and answer our questions. The information we will receive from you will be a big boost to our project.

The following is a list of our questions. It would be amazing if you could answer even a few.

How do film critics evaluate/rate the movies that they watch?
How can you tell that the reviews are not biased?
Do critics collect information and take notes during the movie or do they try to remember all the details after? If they do it during the movie doesn’t that affect their attention? If they do it after, isn’t there a chance that the whole effect of the movie is gone?
Are their certain factors that automatically make critics give bad reviews such as too many songs?
Do you know if critics’ reviews play into decisions about awards such as Oscars?
Do you believe that the advice of professional film critics should be taken before watching a movie?
Do you think that too many people just look at the numbers (such as how many stars the film is rated, the percent of people who like the film, etc.), or people actually read the written parts?

Thank you so much for reading this message. We hope to hear back from you soon and we appreciate the work that you and other film critics do.
    Sincerely,
    Nandini Jhaveri and Tarani Kalagara

  2. Dear Mr. Abrams,

My name is Tringa Hasaj and I am a journalism student of the Fontys University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. I am reaching out to you to request a very small bit of your time.

Currently, I am working on a major production along with my associate Tijmen Schauwaert. Our production covers the effects of the coronavirus on the film industry in the United States of America. I want to learn how the virus has impacted the industry. Not only concerning post-production but also the making of films. Now I can imagine that there will be some changes while shooting a film for the safety of everyone. Such as the cast members keeping the required distance. I am intrigued to know what these differences are and if they will eventually be noticeable on screen (in the film). In order to find out about this, I want to speak to a film critic who can fill me in on this matter.

During my search for film critics on this subject, I came across your name. I have read that you have a lot of experience in this field. A highly interesting occupation that is most involved with the film industry. And so it became quite clear to me that you would be the perfect fit as to the critic I want to speak with.

Therefore, I was wondering if you would be available for a Skype or telephone interview anytime between May 29th and June 4th. If you let me know which dates and times are convenient for you, I would be happy to accommodate your schedule. It would be an honor to have this interview with you.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Yours sincerely,
    Tringa Hasaj
